چکیده

Animals abstract relevant information from a profusion of diverse stimuli and then organize appropriate behavioral responses. How is this done? A partial answer comes from studies on the flight steering system of the locust where multiple sensory systems have been shown to interact and shape the response properties of deviationspecific detector neurons. These sensory detector neurons project to a population of segmental premotor interneurons, which, gated by the flight central oscillator, then phase-couple and distribute integrated sensorimotor information to specific flight motoneurons, thus producing the motor program modifications which underly corrective steering responses.

A role for sensory inputs in the generation of the flight motor pattern.

Rhythmic behaviours such as breathing, walking or flying are now understood to be generated by the interplay between patterns of neural activity generated in the central nervous system and sensory inputs. Many of the pioneering insights into the generation and control of rhythmic motor patterns were made by studying the neural circuits generating the locust flight motor pattern. Malcolm Burrows...

Organization and function of neuronal circuits controlling movement

M ovement is essential for survival and represents the final behavioral output of many computations in the nervous system. One of the most striking characteristics associated with movement is the seemingly endless repertoire of distinct actions and motor programs that our bodies can generate, raising the important question of the underlying neuronal circuit mechanisms that are at the core of re...

Insulin-like peptides are not involved in maturation or functional recovery of neural circuits in the locust flight system.

We sought to manipulate maturation and functional recovery of locust flight circuitry by treating locusts with pharmacological doses of bovine anti-insulin and insulin. Anti-insulin treatment of maturing locusts caused reduced growth of the thoracic nervous system, lower body weight, and softer cuticles compared with control locusts. We were unable to block either maturation or recovery of flig...

Frequency control of motor patterning by negative sensory feedback.

The sensory system plays a key role in the generation of behavior by providing the nervous system with information about the environment and feedback about body movements such that motor output can continuously be adapted to changing circumstances. Although the effects of sensory organs on nervous system function have been demonstrated in many systems, the impact of sensory activity has rarely ...

The motor system of hindleg ruddering has only been grossly described, whereas the motor system which produce...
